It’s been a whirlwind of a year for Google, particularly when it comes to search. But, I’m taking a break from reporting on the continued Google volatility to examine the latest AI Overviews update.

AI Overviews were first launched in the US back in May this year, providing a fast and easy way for users to search. The AI-generated search result pulls key information, based on your query, to the top of the page.

AI Overviews expanded into new markets in August 2024, including the UK, Brazil, and Japan. But, Google has just announced that the search feature will now be available in over 100 countries around the world, reaching more than one billion users each month. But, which countries support AI Overviews?

AI Overviews Goes Global

The update from Google revealed that AI Overviews will now be available in over 100 countries and support five new languages – it has previously only been accessible in English.

Now, AI Overviews supports English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. And, no matter the country you’re in, you can view AI Overview results in your preferred language – if it’s one of the six that are currently supported.

As for supported countries, the better question is, where can’t you see AI Overviews? Google has expanded the AI-powered search feature from seven countries to 100+, making it more universally accessible for users around the world. Though, you’ll notice some major players, such as France, Germany, and Spain, are missing from the list.

Improvements to Boost Traffic

Since launching earlier this year in the US, AI Overviews has been under the magnifying glass. With any AI tool, errors happen, and many users have pointed out funny or even troubling results generated by AI Overviews. For example, it encouraged people to run with scissors as a form of exercise, and, most recently, referenced a far-right study as a source for an answer on national IQs.

That said, Google has made a wave of improvements to AI Overviews over the past few months. Firstly, it made relevant links more accessible, which Google says increased traffic to those supporting sites.

And, most recently, Google rolled out ads in AI Overviews for US mobile users. This means commercial queries will now produce relevant ads to help connect customers with the products they’re looking for. The expansion into further territories is the biggest update to date.

Of course, since AI Overviews is still in its infancy and less than a year old, mistakes will continue to appear. For now, it’s unclear how this will shape the future of search, especially as it spreads its reach around the world.
