Following weeks of search volatility, Google’s November 2024 core update has been released. The rollout, which started on November 11th, is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.
Google teased the algorithm update at its Web Creator Summit in October, but it comes only a short few months after the last algorithm update in August 2024, which had many websites hoping for ranking recovery in the SERPs. It will be Google’s third and likely final core update of the year.
The November core update has been dropped at a crucial time of year for website owners and businesses relying on seasonal retail and related search surges. That said, the expected rollout time should mean the update finishes before Black Friday and the holiday shopping period – but only just before, if all goes to plan.
What We Know So Far
The latest November core update continues Google’s stated efforts to improve its search results for users – despite how hotly contested the results have been among the SEO community. From its LinkedIn post about the rollout, Google added:
“This update is designed to continue our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search.”
Since the update dropped last night, it’s too soon to tell what impact this will have on websites, particularly those still hoping to recover from past helpful content updates, or the last August core update.
However, Google made it clear to many website owners at the Website Creator Summit that the search landscape is changing and it’s unlikely that many will experience full recovery. Ouch. But, don’t worry! Not all hope is lost.
So, what can you do? Take a look at Google’s recommendations for websites below:
Google’s Recommendations 💻
- Don’t make hasty changes – Google suggests “making changes that make sense for your users and are sustainable in the long term” instead of rushing to overhaul your entire website
- Make meaningful improvements – think about your visitors and customers and only make changes that will be helpful to them
- Try to avoid deleting content – this should be a last resort and Google only recommends doing this if you think this content was “created for search engines first, and not people”
