John Mueller, a Google search advocate, recently raised some eyebrows on Reddit.  When a Redditor in the SEO Subreddit asked whether startups need a blog in 2025, Mueller left the straightforward answer, “no,” without elaborating further. This leads us to believe that having a blog isn’t necessary when improving your site rankings in 2025.

In an increasingly volatile search landscape (with much more volatility in the new year) this might not be the news that you wanted to hear, more so if creating a blog was one of your 2025 goals.

That said, is Mueller’s advice true for all business websites? Though adding a blog to your website won’t necessarily boost your SEO, it may have other benefits – be it for your blog’s visitors or for giving your site an authority uplift in the new year.

Below, I’ll explore this topic in more depth to see whether your website “needs” a blog in 2025, and more importantly, if Google would still care about it?

The Key Signs You Should You Start a Blog

You might not need a blog in 2025 to improve your Google ranking, but there are still situations when starting a blog can work in your website’s favor. In 2024, Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, also shared his two cents on whether business websites need a blog to rank:

Based on Sullivan’s points above, I recommend starting a blog in 2025 if:

  • It would bring direct value to your customers – First and foremost, your blog should serve your customers’ needs. Consider if the blog topics you’re covering are useful for your readers, or resolve a key pain point for them.
  • You can cover a topic in more depth that your competition can’t – Do you have a unique point of view that other websites can’t offer? Starting a blog could then be beneficial, especially if your goal is to build your website’s expertise and authority.
  • You don’t have direct commercial intent for starting a blog – If your main goal of starting a blog is to sell products or services, you may want to try another tactic (i.e. growing a business social media presence). Focus on creating informative content over purely promotional content.

So Will Google Care About Your Blog in 2025?

If we take Muller and Sullivan’s combined advice at face value, it does feel as if Google cares less about blogs, especially when it comes to whether this tactic will help your website rank or not.

However, though starting a blog isn’t the strongest way to improve your business website’s basic SEO strategy, this isn’t to say that it doesn’t come with its benefits.

Above all, focus on your target audience and not Google. Even if your blog pages don’t index well, they can still improve your pre-existing relationship with customers if they provide informational value.

Additionally, if returning customers do begin interacting with your content, this might improve other ranking factors, like time spent on site or testimonials from past buyers, which could actually benefit your site’s SEO in other ways.

Top Tip: If you do add a blog to your website, make sure that it has an accessible blog design that is easy for site visitors to find and navigate. Opt for an organized website navigation bar and blog categories arranged in a logical way.
