Bluesky opened fully to the public in 2024, having previously been invite-only, and it has since grown in popularity due to its focus on user control and custom feeds.

“In 2023, we launched our first layer of verification: letting individuals and organizations set their domain as their username. Since then, over 270,000 accounts have linked their Bluesky username to their website. Domain handles continue to be an important part of verification on Bluesky. At the same time, we’ve heard from users that a larger visual signal would be useful in knowing which accounts are authentic.”

There will be two types of symbols with this new verification system:
- Verified Account – Bluesky will “proactively verify authentic and notable accounts”, such as celebrities and brands
- Trusted Verifier – Select companies, such as The New York Times, will be able to issue verified checks to their employees directly (which Bluesky will also review)
With the help of verification, Bluesky is working to eliminate the risk of fake accounts and impersonators while also reassuring high-profile users and businesses.
How to get your business verified on Bluesky
Currently, the best way to verify your profile is by adding your website domain to your Bluesky handle. By default, accounts will feature your username plus the bsky.social handle, but you can change the Bluesky handle to show your website instead. For example, instead of websitebuilderexpert.bsky.social, I could set it to @websitebuilderexpert.com.While Bluesky has introduced blue-tick verification this week, it’s in a testing stage and hasn’t been rolled out widely. Bluesky is manually verifying large organizations and celebrities, but it has reassured users that it’ll eventually provide a request form that interested accounts can use to become verified users.

Currently, Bluesky is home to over 33 million users, with many jumping ship from X to enjoy this alternative instead. There’s no harm in exploring the platform for yourself, in addition to other social media channels – ultimately, using Bluesky is an opportunity to reach more people and build brand awareness.
