TikTok and Instagram’s ongoing battle for domination has just heated up. Instagram has dropped “Edits,” an editing app with tools unmistakably similar to TikTok’s editing app, CapCut. Announced on April 23, the free app extends its capabilities beyond video editing, with video inspiration and ideation tools.

But could Edits really be capable of replacing all other content creation tools? It’s a definite possibility. I’ll walk you through the need-to-know features that make Instagram Edits a strong threat to CapCut and TikTok.

Ideation and Inspiration Boards

Instagram positions Edits as an all-in-one solution to the video creation process, which often requires “multiple apps and complicated workflows.” This immediately rings true when you enter the app’s “Inspiration” and “Notes” tabs, which feel like Pinterest and Notion combined.

“Inspiration” shows a stream of Instagram Reels using trending sounds, which you can add to your videos or save for later in the “Notes” tab.

In Notes, color-coded “Stickies” help you jot down and remember content ideas, which can stand alone or be attached to saved Reels to form a functional inspiration board.

These tools are similar to those in YouTube Studio, and I haven’t seen them in any other video editing app. They may be enough to win over businesses, especially in combination with  Instagram’s Trial Reels, which provide risk-free content experimentation.

In-App Content Creation

Once you enter the editor, you’ll be able to create videos up to 10 minutes long, which is a huge increase on the three-minute limit when posting directly on Instagram.

On top of the standard video tools you’d expect from an editor, I noticed a lot of crossover with popular TikTok features, such as greenscreens, voiceovers, and video speed manipulation. These are a game-changer for businesses looking for a TikTok alternative amid the possible US ban, since you’ll be able to replicate your signature content styles and popular TikTok trends.

Instagram Edits comes with some powerful AI editing features:

  • Animate: Bring static photos to life as video
  • Cutout: Select people or objects from a video with movement tracking, and overlay this on other videos

TopTip: Unlike CapCut, videos made on Instagram Edits are watermark-free. This makes it easier to repurpose your content on other platforms without drawing attention to the fact.

Once you’ve created your video, you can post directly to Instagram Reels from within the app. Or, if you want to revisit it later, you can save all your drafts to the “Projects” tab.

Final Thoughts

Instagram Edits and CapCut are close competitors, offering lots of similar features and tools. But, while CapCut is optimized to be used with TikTok, what makes Edits stand out is its universality.

Firstly, it’s a given that the Meta app will work seamlessly with Facebook’s features. But, thanks to its watermark-free exporting and comprehensive range of popular editing features, it’s suitable for all your social media editing needs – including TikTok.

🆕What’s next for Edits? Instagram has already teased a few upcoming improvements for Edits. Most notably, video collaboration and feedback are on the cards, which will transform the way businesses work with influencers.
